Seen below is an illustration of 5 major scales that have their root located on the open strings E, A, D, G, and B.

You can see that on each string the scale is composed of a series of half-steps (one fret jumps) and whole steps (two fret jumps).  The pattern from the root is as follows:
Whole, whole half, whole, whole, whole, half.
