Rootless Ninth Chords are exactly what they sound like:  ninth chords where the root is omitted.  What’s easy about rootless ninth chords is that you already know them, assuming you know seventh chords.   That’s because ninth chords are what you get when you stack an additional third on to a seventh chord.

1 – 3 – 5 – 7

Cmaj9
1 – 3 – 5 – 7 – 9

To get the rootless version of this chord, simply take away the root:

3 – 5 – 7 – 9
